Rocket engines , matches , caps , plaster and igniters should all be kept in dry places . Never keep them out side as the damp will cause them to perish . Shotgun powder has to be kept 100% dry and cool or instantanious combustion may take place ! Dry Ice should be kept cool or it may explode to ! All other stuff isn't fussy but don't be a silly billy and put it in the bath or other daft stuff ! 1.4) Prices are an important factor of amature anarchy . Coz we aint got much money we have to be careful ! Rocket Engines (3 pack) o2.50 - o6 Caps 7p per roll Matches 10p a Box Shotgun Powder lot for o10 Bleach 2 litres o1 Salt substitue o2 for 1Kg Dry Ice 0.5 litre o5 2. 2.1) Your explosive device has to be contained in something , if you want fun fireworks then you will be best using card or paper wraped very tight , but if you want some thing with a bit more wap then you will probally best using metal tubing like exaust pipeing or copper pipe used for plumbing . Crip over one end or fill it with plaster , or even both . With paper cases you will be best to fill your tube up to the brim with you explosive compound then put in a fuse , fill the surround with plaster for a good seal ! When using metal tubing never fold the top of your device as presure will be made causing lethal explosions ! Always put the hole for your fuse in first because when your bashing or drilling heat and pressure will be made which is not a very nice thing . 2.2) Paper casings are cheap , easy and the safest alternative , you can buy 0.5" tubing for model rockery very cheaply from your local model shop which when strenthened is probally the best all rounder . Good cases can be made easy and safely using normal thick A4 paper with about 10 - 15 layers depending on you device . 2.3) Metal contains are used when severe high pressures are being made from the device , If you can get hold of screw on caps you are very luckey but for copper piping , soldering on end caps are the best if you want space and reliability . 2.4) Plastic film canisers , like what you get with 35mm camera film are very hand , just poke a hole in the lid before you put it on and your laughing ! CO2 bottles , Empty aerosol cans are also good but shrapnal is made (bits of flying junk) . 3. 3.1) You device has to be ignited or set off some how . Probally the most reliable and simplist being a fuse (light and run like hell) to the more planned and complex elecronic ingnion systems . You can make successfull timers out of a digital allarmed watch , a transistor , a relay and a large 6v battery ( and a free afternoon , a soldering and lots of patients ) but this topic will be covered later ! You can use a cigarette to light fuses , 3.2 / 3.3) A simple fuse can be made from a peice of string and some shotgun powder mixed with petrol to make a paste . What you do is rub the string with the paste using your thumb and two fingers . After a thick layer has been applied leave to dry for about 2 days or until dry , check the speed of burning and always put about 1" / 1.5" of fuse inside the device . You can substitute the shotgun powder with poweder rocket engine fuel . 3.4) Electrical igniton systems are very simple to set up and use and also more veristile and accurely timed . You can buy rocket ignitors from your local hobby / model shop and some times toy stores . They cost o2.50 for 10 and are 99% reliable . You can put iron wool (some times called wire wool) across a 9v battery and it would light most shotgun powder / caps / rocket engine based devices . Very simple and very cheap , as long as you aint bothered about loosing the battery ! 4. 4.1) Fire works were invented by the chinaes made from paper and black powder , they were for entertainment puposes and they still are in the leading lines of fireworks ! They are easy to make (usually) and with some pratice , very spectacular perfomances can be made . Fire works are in three general catagories , Banger , Rockets and Fountains . Fountains being the hardest to make . 4.2) The pricipals of a rocket are hot gases escaping rapidly from subsances burning and being propelled along . You can use fine black powder or shotgun powder and even matches . But the easist being just walk into you local model shop and buy a pack of three estes engines for about o3.50 . Theese engines are built with three stages . ________________________ |________________________| C=Clay |C|FFFFFFFFF|SS|EE|C| S=Smoke Igniter--> _>FFFFFFFFF|SS|EE|C| E=Ejection Charge _|C|FFFFFFFFF|SS|EE|C|__ F=Actual Propusion Fuel |________________________| <---Paper Tube If you cut the engine open the fuel is a solid block which if you put in a paper bag and crush with a vise , a roling pin and a little help from a hammer your can make a powder which can be used like gun powder . If you want to make trumendous fire works you can remove the clay next to the ejection charge and connect a banger or fountain . With a little practise display like fire works can be made . 4.3) Bangers , we all love them , but there simpler to make than you think . If you take a roll of caps and fold them in the middle so that the little cells of gun powder are showing openly , then fold them round and round :- ----------------- | OOOOOOOOOOOOO | <----fold this way ----------------- ________ | ____ | | | | | | || | | <----- Wrap up like a sail ! | || | | | ||_| | | |____| When you have done this for a whole role bite it all realy hard but dont get it wet , wrap them up in celotape and wrap up in paper also add a little petrol or somet for easy ignition . Now light and run like hell , these little babies make your ears ring for hours!!! Another easy way to make bangers is to fill a peice of copper pipe with powders rocket engines or shotgun powder , put in a fuse and block both ends with tisue paper and/or plaster . 4.4) Candels are the same but dont compress the powder and also add the powder off sparklers to give the colours . If you mix some shotgun powder or rocket powder with a little water to make a dough like subsance and then add the sparkler powder , roll up little balls and put three in , green orange and red you can make cool trafic lights . Always put the fuse bellow the first ball and make sure the balls can easily shoot out of the top of the casing . 4.5) Whats top and whats not Taken from the jolly rogers cook book .... SAFETY TIPS -- HOW NOT TO GET KILLED An "own goal" is the death of a person on your side from one of your own devices. It is obvious that these should be avoided at all costs. While no safety device is 100% reliable, it is usually better to be on the side of caution. BASIC SAFETY RULES 1) DON'T SMOKE! (don't laugh- an errant cigarette wiped out the Weathermen) 2) GRIND ALL INGREDIENTS SEPERATELY. It's suprising how friction sensitive some supposedly "safe" explosives really are. 3) ALLOW for a 20% margin of error- Just because the AVERAGE burning rate of a fuse is 30 secs/foot, don't depend on the 5 inches sticking out of your pipe bomb to take exactly 2.5 minutes. 4) OVERESTIMATE THE RANGE OF YOUR SHRAPNEL. The cap from a pipe bomb can oftentravel a block or more at high velocities before coming to rest- If you have to stay nearby, remember that if you can see it, it can kill you. 5) When mixing sensitive compounds (such as flash powder) avoid all sources of static electricity. Mix the ingredients by the method below: HOW TO MIX INGREDIENTS The best way to mix two dry chemicals to form an explosive is to do as the small-scale fireworks manufacturer's do: Ingredients: 1 large sheet of smooth paper (for example a page from a newspaper that does not use staples) The dry chemicals needed for the desired compound. 1) Measure out the appropriate amounts of the two chemicals, and pour them in two small heaps near opposite corners of the sheet. 2) Pick up the sheet by the two corners near the powders, allowing the powders to roll towards the middle of the sheet. 3) By raising one corner and then the other, roll the powders back and forth in the middle of the open sheet, taking care not to let the mixture spill from either of the loose ends. 4) Pour the powder off from the middle of the sheet, and use immediately. If it must be stored use airtight containers (35mm film canisters work nicely) and store away from people, houses, and valuable items. 5. 5.1) This section is all about stuff you can easily make with little knoledge and time and resources , basicly fun stuff to show your kids like the Caps banger ! 5.2) Simple safety match heads in a pipe, capped at both ends, make a devestating bomb. It is set off with a regular fuse. A plastic Baggie is put into the pipe before the heads go in to prevent detonation by contact with the metal. Cutting enough match heads to fill the pipe can be tedious work for one but an evening's fun for the family if you can drag them away from the TV. An easy way to remove the heads is to put them all in water then just rub or the heads with your fingers . When you have emptied 5 or 6 boxes put you mixture of water and match heads in the oven at a low temp (140 degs) until all of the water has evaporated then this can be used to make fuses too . 5.3) For a relatively low shrapnel explosion, I suggest pouring it into an empty 35mm film cannister either shotgun powder or powderes rocket engines . Poke a hole in the plastic lid for a fuse. These goodies make an explosion audible a mile away easily. 1) Poke the hole before putting the powder into the cannister. 2) Don't get any powder on the lip of the cannister. 3) Only use a very small quantity and work your way up to the desired result. 4) Do not pack the powder, it works best loose. 5) Do not grind or rub the mixture - it is friction sensitive. 6) Use a long fuse. 5.4) Making Plastic Explosives from Bleach Potassium chlorate is an extremely volatile explosive compound, and has been used in the past as the main explosive filler in grenades, land mines, and mortar rounds by such countries as France and Germany. Common household bleach contains a small amount of potassium chlorate, which can be extracted by the procedure that follows. First off, you must obtain: [1] A heat source (hot plate, stove, etc.) [2] A hydrometer, or battery hydrometer [3] A large Pyrex, or enameled steel container (to weigh chemicals) [4] Potassium chloride (sold as a salt substitute at health and nutrition stores) Take one gallon of bleach, place it in the container, and begin heating it. While this solution heats, weigh out 63 grams of potassium chloride and add this to the bleach being heated. Constantly check the solution being heated with the hydrometer, and boil until you get a reading of 1.3. If using a battery hydrometer, boil until you read a FULL charge. Take the solution and allow it to cool in a refrigerator until it is between room temperature and 0 degrees Celcius. Filter out the crystals that have formed and save them. Boil this solution again and cool as before. Filter and save the crystals. Take the crystals that have been saved, and mix them with distilled water in the following proportions: 56 grams per 100 milliliters distilled water. Heat this solution until it boils and allow to cool. Filter the solution and save the crystals that form upon cooling. This process of purification is called "fractional crystalization". These crystals should be relatively pure potassium chlorate. Powder these to the consistency of face powder, and heat gently to drive off all moisture. Now, melt five parts Vaseline with five parts wax. Dissolve this in white gasoline (camp stove gasoline), and pour this liquid on 90 parts potassium chlorate (the powdered crystals from above) into a plastic bowl. Knead this liquid into the potassium chlorate until intimately mixed. Allow all gasoline to evaporate. Finally, place this explosive into a cool, dry place. Avoid friction, sulfur, sulfides, and phosphorous compounds. This explosive is best molded to the desired shape and density of 1.3 grams in a cube and dipped in wax until water proof. These block type charges guarantee the highest detonation velocity. Also, a blasting cap of at least a 3 grade must be used. The presence of the afore mentioned compounds (sulfur, sulfides, etc.) results in mixtures that are or can become highly sensitive and will possibly decompose explosively while in storage. You should never store homemade explosives, and you must use EXTREME caution at all times while performing the processes in this article. 5.5) Dry Ice Bomb There is no standard formula for a dry ice bomb, however a generic form is as follows: Take a 2-liter soda bottle, empty it completely, then add about 3/4 Lb of Dry Ice (crushed works best) and (optional) a quantity of water. Depending on the condition of the bottle, the weather, and the amount and temperature of the bottle the bomb will go off in 30 seconds - 5 minutes. Without any water added, the 2-liter bottles will go often in 3-7 minutes if dropped into a warm river, and in 45 minutes to 1 1/2 hours in open air. The explosion sounds equivalent to an M-100. _Plastic_ 16 oz. soda bottles and 1 liter bottles work almost as well as do the 2-liters, however glass bottles aren't nearly as loud, and can produce dangerous shrapnel. 5.6) Smoke Bomb smoke bombs are easily made from rocket engines , a cheap 'A' engine will do nicely , First of all cut the paper off with a very sharp knife and make sure you dont break the little cyristals off , Use a lit cigarette to light the crystals on the end and you can wrap the block of fuel lightly and insert a fues , play around with theese little babies , one engine will fill a decent sized room with thick white , bad smelling smoke . So just think what you can do with 3 ! 5.7) Fun with a lighter if you take a cheap non refillable lighter and pull all the metal crap off the end , then light the plasic bits (like the button , flame adjuster etc ) with another lighter . This burns a hole in the lighter and all the gas escapes quickly and the lighter explodes in a flame ball and also goes bang . Make sure your about 10 foot away because the flame ball are about 6 foot squared ! They also jump about when they explode . 5.8) Spud Cannon Have you ever seen a potatoe fly about 500 meters in 5 seconds! This is great fun for a saturaday afternoon ! Take a peice of drain pipe about 1.5 meters long , put a cap on one end of it , drill 3 holes in it like so :- ---- One here ________________________|_____ one here ------>o | | ____________________________|_| | ----- One here now put two peices of coat hanger in the top and bottem holes so they dont touch in the tube but are about 0.5" apart . Take a sparker out of a cooker or lighter or gas fire and attach reliabily two peices of wire to the terminals (metal bits where the spark jumps across) and the other end of theese two peices of wire to the bits of coat hanger . Tape it all together like a rocket launcer :- ______________________________ o | | ____________________________|_| |-| | | | <--- Handel | |_| | Trigger Now put a bag or something in the tube and get a can of lighter gas (butane) and squirt it in the hole , fill the space in the tube with gas and put a peice of tape or blue tack over the hole . Press the trigger and brace yourself ! A big flame and a big thud should come out of the tube . If you can seal the holes where the wires go into the tube with silicone , PVA glue or just blue tack will make the launcher more reliable (and it wont loose as much gas!) . Find a spud / orange / apple / tennis ball / or anything that fits into the tube without any gaps and fill the tube with gas . Press the trigger ! Enought said ? Experiment with different fuels , deoderant works well and so does hair spray (cheapo stuff from quick save) . 5.9) Fire Lighter You can make realy good fire lighters from fine sawdust mixed with petrol and molded into blocks , this has to be kept wrapped in cling film and plastic bags to stop the petrol from evaporation . These blocks are really handy when camping or bonfire night , you can use them on BBQ's but make sure they have completely burn out coz their toxic ! 5.10) Tennis Ball Bombs For this cool little trick you will need :- 1 tennis ball very sharp knife match heads / shotgun powder / riosnapers / Rocket powder electrical tape spare half hour! first of all cut a small (1") slit in the tennis ball . Fill it with Match heads / shotgun powder / riosnappers (be careful) / rocket powder or a mix of the lot . Pack the stuff in real tight . Seal the tennis ball up with the tape . Thats it , make a stack of theese and lob them as high up as possible (or drop them of a multistory car park) and run ! Bye , Bye tennis ball !!! You can use these in the spud cannon or mix them in with the balls your P.E teacher use !!! These can also be fused . 6.1) Timers / Detonators . When you see these film where a bomb is in a building with flashing numbers on it , would you like to make a simpler one ? First of all take a cheap ( less than £5 ) watch with an alarm and remove the back plate . Solder a peice of wire onto the little spring that touches the center of the backplate and another onto the little peice of metal that touches the outer of the back plate , take a transisor and connect these two wires , the one from the spring goes to the middle leg (base) and the one from the peice of metal to the one nearest the tab (emmitor) . Get a decent size relay and connect one of the controling legs to the collector and the other to a 9v battery , also connect the emmitor to the other terminal of the battery . Now the relay is your switch that you connect the electronic ignition system , this uses 4 x 1.5v batteries in a battery box , an electronic ignitor from a rocket and 3 peices of wire , connect the one terminal of the battery to one on the relay , the other one on the relay to one on the ignitor and the other one on the ignitor to the battery . Now when ever the alarm goes off it will turn the igniton circuit on ! Set your alarm for the time you wish your explosive to go off , wrap it all in tape and forget all about it but keep well away . Before planting the explosive test the timer with a spare ignitor cos some watches are just shit and dont work ! 6.2) Home Made Timer With very little knoledge of electronics you can make a timer from a 555 timer chip , a capacitor , 2 resistors , a switch , a relay , a transistor , A big battery (6v road work type) and a 9v battery . Also using a bread board (prototyping board) does help but if you can make you own PCB well it will become cheaper in the long run ! First of all make a potential devider with the capacitor and the restor and connect it to pins 6 and 7 . Wire pin 4 + 8 to the 9v rail and 1 to the 0v rail . Make another potential devider with a push to make switch and a resistor , wire this to pin 2 . Connect pin 3 to the base of the transistor and wire the emitor to the 0v rail and the colector to the relay then the 9v rail . Now connect the relay to your big battery and the electronic igniter . Depending on the size of your capacitor and your resistor you can make up to a 20 min delay and it will cost less than £2 !! This system is very reliable . If you use a 100mF capacitor and a 50K resistor you should have a very long delay (always time it before actual use) . Basicaly the bigger the resistor (always stick with a 100mF capacitor) the longer the time delay , 555 timer chip's only work for about 45 mins.
